Luke observed the completion of his sketch. Since yesterday morning, when he

had begun drawing it by hand, he had been working on it on and off and had

finally finished it to his satisfaction. Now in colour, it did the

mysterious apprentice that he had discovered on Endor a lot more justice.

He had continued working on it ever since his briefing at the Senator’s

Chamber. He and R2 had been waiting for the vote to end in this small office

not very far from the great chamber. Luke had decided to continue his work

on the sketch while they were waiting, saving a lot of time in the process.

He had scanned the sketch into a computer and continued to work on it

digitally. The computer had helped him to perfectly colorize the image. The

crimson red and pitch black tattoo all over the man’s face and head, as well

as the yellow-white horns on top of his head and most of all the yellow,

piercing eyes, now fully came to life from the originally crude sketch that

Luke had made. Looking at the Sith Lord in full colour, it almost gave him

the creepy feeling that he would crawl out of the screen.

Just as he almost had done in the woods of Endor.

Luke brought out a disc and began making a copy of the completed image. He

would bring it back with him to Yavin 4 and upload it into the Academy’s

main computer there. Besides from the features of this Sith, this was not

much of a profile. But it was better than nothing. And the extremely rare

and specialized look on this man was certainly enough to save for later.

By the time the download was completed, Luke’s senses felt a familiar

presence coming closer to his location. He was slightly surprised to feel

her approach so soon after the briefing. Not even a full hour had passed

since he had left the standing ovations behind.

Had the vote not gone as planned after all?

R2 gave the former Princess of Alderaan a few whistles in greeting as she

entered the office. Luke rose out of his chair and observed his sister. Her

face didn’t reveal anything, not giving any hints if she brought good or bad

news.

Leia waited to address the Jedi Master until the door closed behind her.

- “The vote is over, Luke. We’ve reached a decision.”

Luke’s heart was beating rapidly. He could not deny how nervous he was to

learn the outcome.

- “What did they say?”

Leia’s unemotional features burst into a huge smile.

- “The New Republic says yes,” she informed with delight. - “More than

ninety-eight percent voted to support the Jedi and fight against Palpatine.

Each world will work out their own contingency plan if they are Palpatine’s

next target. And they have also promised to support each other whenever

Palpatine moves in. That you gave them the warning to act on time hit home.

It created a lot of credibility towards the Jedi. You have all the support

you need.”

- “Thank the Force.”

Luke sighed in relief as he sank back down into his chair. All his nervous

anxiety left him. He had truly been victorious this afternoon, in a fight he

had never been sure how to fight in the first place.

- “This is the first sense of hope I’ve felt in days,” he explained.

- “For me it has been even longer than that,” Leia said. - “I can hardly

remember the last time all the worlds within the New Republic came to a

united agreement so quickly.”

- “For once, the Dark memory of Palpatine has worked in our favour,” Luke

said.

- “Or the reminder of what a certain Jedi Master spends all his hours to try

to do for them.”

Luke looked at his sister. She was standing there, all dressed up in her

white and elegant dress. She always found ways to compliment him. But he

sometimes, like now, found it hard to figure out if the compliment came from

the New Republic or if it just came from her.

It didn’t matter, at least not now. He had done what he was supposed to do.

But he couldn’t have done it without her help. She had come to his rescue

when he had practically lost all focus.

- “By the way, thanks for backing me up in there.”

- “There are certain matters of procedures we must attend to and respect

during our meetings, but there are some things I do not tolerate,” Leia

declared with determination. - “That he made it personal just made it

worse.”

- “For me or for you?” Luke asked.

- “For him, not us.”

Leia stepped closer to him, giving R2 a little tap on his head in

recognition as she passed the droid.

- “It’s not the question whether Fey’lya believes you are actually once more

about to turn to the Dark Side or not, he doesn’t really care which side

you’re on since he can’t tell the difference anyway. He simply doesn’t like

either you or me, he trusts no Jedi.”

A small frown escaped her as she continued.

- “And he’s damn quick, as always, to remind us of our parentage.”

Fifteen years had passed since the Battle of Endor. Fifteen years since the

Civil War had officially ended. Fifteen years since their father had passed

away.

And still, the memory of Darth Vader somehow lived on, even within the

hearts of those who hardly remembered his terror.

And she and Luke seemed forever cursed to live with it. To live with the

onslaught from others for something their father had done but not them.

Leia didn’t bother about it that much, though. She was used to these forms

of assaults. And, even if she had accepted who her real father truly was,

she had not taken him to her heart. She wondered if she ever would.

Luke, however, had. He had fully embraced their father, even in the form of

Darth Vader. A greater sign of compassion and unconditional love, Leia knew,

could not be found anywhere else. Luke’s enormous love for all life was what

always amazed her most of all about him. And that was why Leia worried for

him every time someone brought up Vader’s name. Darth Vader was never spoken

highly of.

He had taken an emotional beating today because of Fey’lya’s mention of

their father. It seemed her brother was taking it a lot better than she

would have expected, though.

- “Fey’lya’s schemes do not surprise me,” Luke said. - “I know what he

thinks about me. And of you, too. But I was worried that he would ruin my

chances to gain support, now when I really need it.”

- “Well, he failed utterly, Luke, as always. His uncalled for attack on you

actually worked in our favour, since it also reminded everyone how much you

have evolved since Byss and of all the things you’ve accomplished ever

since. You are not like the Dark Side of our father and everyone knows that.

And if you had wanted to join Palpatine you would already have had several

chances to do so by now. Instead you have always challenged him. And unlike

Fey’lya, the rest understand and respect the Jedi a lot more.”

As she stopped right beside where her brother was sitting, Leia placed her

hand on his right shoulder.

- “I’m sorry he put you through that in front of everyone, though,” she

said. - “It was not fair.”

- “I’ll live.”

Luke put his own hand on top of hers that was caressing his shoulder. The

touch of his prosthetic hand made her warm inside. It was maybe hard to

believe for outsiders, but Luke rarely gave her such small gestures of

brotherly love these days. It was as if he knowingly stayed away from doing

so. When they first had met twenty years ago he had behaved so differently.

He still hugged her and gave her a kiss or two. But small gestures like

these were nowadays very rare. And Leia could not figure out why. Or whose

fault it could be.

Something kept Luke from being the brother she had once had, the one she had

received after the Battle of Endor. Something was weighing down on him.

But what?

The touch of his hand almost made her gasp since it reminded her of what she

was missing. But she did not intend to disturb the moment by asking

questions about it. She had done that so many times before and he had never

given her any answer. Another sign that something was not right. That Luke

had changed. Somehow.

The only thing Leia knew for sure was that it all had started the last time

Palpatine had returned. After his last defeat, Luke had approached her

differently. And all gestures, words and brotherly affection he had always

given her before Byss that had kept them so close in their hearts, were

nearly gone.

Luke was still her brother. But no longer that close twin of hers that he

used to be.

He was pushing her away.

But not at the moment.

At least not as long as his hand touched hers.

However, the moment and gesture was meant to end. His hand moved away from

hers. And Luke’s whole being recoiled from her once more and returned to his

strange content of only being her brother.

And not her best friend.

He looked up over his right shoulder and met her eyes, not realizing the

stir of feelings his gentle gesture had just given her. For once, he had not

realized he had let go of his barriers for a second. Too much was on his

mind for him to notice.

- “Fey’lya is a full-fledged politician, which means that when he’s not out

to gain favours by kissing babies, he’s stealing their lollipops.”

Leia started to giggle. Luke had such a cute, naive and still fresh way of

observing the world of politics. And he was right about Fey’lya. He was very

right.

- “He only knows and cares about his own narrow view of the universe. If I

allow myself to give him the pleasure of patronising me for what I am, then

I sink into his narrow perspective as well. As a Jedi, I must know better.”

- “You do, Luke,” Leia confirmed to him. - “But I will still never tolerate

that kind of behaviour aimed at anyone in the government, at least not

during our crisis meetings. Not as long as I am the Chief of State!”

She stepped away from him for a second. Her irritation with the Bothan

senator was building up and Luke’s blue eyes always made her feel guilty.

She did not wish to disappoint her Jedi Master. What he was saying about

himself about not sinking to Fey’lya’s level was applied as much to her as

to him.

- “There are matters of procedures after all; otherwise it would all fall

apart,” she added while she was looking away.

- “Well, that would surely please our old nemesis,” Luke stated. -

“Bickering amongst ourselves at this point is just as dangerous as any Dark

Force ability he may throw at us.”

If Fey’lya had had his way today, Palpatine could already have been given

half the victory. They had to stand united, government and Jedi. All worlds

that could be the next target once the Moon of Endor was destroyed. They had

to be strong in this hour of Darkness and uncertainty. The New Republic had

proven its worth today by ignoring the fear of the Bothan senator.

But it could just as well have gone the other way around.

Leia turned to her brother once more.

- “You know, I could have forced the issue and demanded unity and

cooperation from the New Republic anyway,” she declared. - “This is, after

all, a matter of galactic security.”

Luke shook his head, relieved that it had not gotten that far. Yes, Leia had

the power to do so but it would have been the wrong way to save the

situation. By freely choosing unity they maybe had managed to save

themselves instead of gaining Palpatine another victory.

- “You can’t force people to take a stand against their will,” he said. -

“That’s how our enemy works. We must not repeat his actions or we are no

better.”

He rose to his feet again, giving the Chief of State a look that could not

be anything but his absolute gratitude.

- “Please, tell the government that I deeply thank them for their support.”

- “I will,” Leia promised. - “Is there anything you already require?”

Luke nodded.

- “Perhaps.”

He made a pause. There was one thing he had not told even Leia yet about

what he had found on Endor. But he was about to. The only reason why he had

decided to wait was to make sure that the government would not find out too

soon. If too many knew, they might risk their only advantage.

- “There was one other factor I didn’t mention before, on purpose,” he

continued. - “I’m not so sure of whom to trust.”

- “Are you saying that the senators can’t be trusted?” Leia asked.

- “Besides from the one we know we can’t trust?”

Leia nodded. Her brother was right. He was being cautious and she could not

blame him. Even if the vote had gone in their favour, Fey’lya had still

gained some percent of the votes. It was enough that he, or the few that

supported him, knew too much to change the whole situation from bad to

worse. Even in their false belief that they were doing the right thing.

- “Honestly, Leia, I don’t know,” Luke confessed. - “I just wish to hold on

to one of the few advantages we may still have.”

- “And that advantage is?”

What more was there for Luke to tell her?

How could it possibly be more and worse than it already was?

- “Palpatine is not alone. He had an Apprentice there as well.”

An Apprentice.

There were two of them.

And Palpatine never surrounded himself with weak allies.

Leia realized quickly why Luke had kept this fact from the government for

the time being. The return of Palpatine was enough. That he was backed up by

another Sith Lord made things even worse.

And more critical.

Fear could easily spread if this got out. Palpatine was in his current

energy form. But his Apprentice was flesh and blood, fully capable to do a

lot of harm.

She could feel shivers crawl up and down her own spine as soon as Luke had

finished.

- “On the moon?” she wondered. Luke gave her a confident nod.

- “I doubt our enemy would have dared to confront us if he wasn’t backed up

with help from someone,” he said. - “He has never done anything entirely on

his own. I have one minion confirmed. But who knows, there might be more.”

Even if Luke felt that it was unlikely, he still had not discarded the

possibility that even further individuals could somehow, in one way or

another, be involved with Palpatine’s return.

He had no knowledge as to how to stop Palpatine in their current situation

but he did know one thing about the dimension in which Palpatine’s spirit

and essence was located. If you entered that other dimension it kept you in

the same physical place in this dimension. At least theoretically, that

meant that when Palpatine was defeated by Brand on Onderon, his essence

would have remained on Onderon.

But it hadn’t.

Somehow, Palpatine had found his way to Endor. That was a long way for a

spirit that was bound to a certain location to travel. He must have found

some kind of help. But from whom?

Could it be the Apprentice?

Luke wasn’t so sure about that. It was too simple. And it didn’t add up with

the other things about this mysterious man with the tattoos that he had

discovered through meditation and with deep conversations with the Force

itself.

Luke knew that if you listened well enough to what the Force was telling

you, you could basically learn anything. And the Force had made him realize

something very extraordinary about this Apprentice that most likely made it

impossible for him to have been the one that helped Palpatine to Endor.

And that in turn meant that perhaps someone else was involved as well.

Someone with Force abilities.

Someone who was willing to help Palpatine.

Someone Luke had no idea of yet.

But, on the other hand, no one can stay hidden forever.

- “What happened?”

Leia was a bit worried by her brother’s revelation. Had there been an

encounter between him and the Apprentice he was talking about?

- “Nothing,” Luke assured. - “This Apprentice was hiding in the terrain

close by, trying to cloak his presence from me. But both he and Palpatine

failed to realize that I noticed him despite their attempts. They believe I

don’t know of this Apprentice’s existence. And as of now, let’s make sure

for as long as possible that we conceal from them exactly how much we do

know.”

Once more, Luke was so calculating, always bringing all facts into account,

analysing the next moves. He was such a genius in these things! That he had

not told her earlier of this was nothing that bothered her. Leia fully

understood his caution.

- “Is he anyone we know?” she wondered.

- “No,” he said. - “No one I’ve ever encountered before. And he had a very

peculiar look.”

Luke moved over to the computer and offered her the chair next to his.

- “I made a crude sketch of him from memory just before I arrived yesterday

morning.”

Finally, as she sat down, she was allowed to see what Luke had been working

on. What Leia saw on the screen was no mere sketch, however. It was a

completed image of their newly discovered foe. And his rare and intimidating

appearance made her gasp. The man that Luke had sketched from memory looked

like he was taken from a nightmare.

She was very pleased that no confrontation had taken place between him and

her brother on Endor. Just by the looks of him, Leia could feel that this

Sith Lord was not someone they should underestimate.

And he could likely be a match even to the Jedi Master.

- “He’s humanoid but not human,” Luke explained as they were both watching

the image. - “Very powerful in the Dark Side of the Force. And I also sensed

that the bond he has with Palpatine is very personal. Emotional even.”

- “Emotional?”

Leia looked at her brother, feeling very puzzled. Since when did Sith Lords

and Dark Jedi feel anything for each other?

Luke fully understood her puzzlement. For that was actually the fact that he

based his whole theory upon.

- “This Apprentice truly is loyal to Palpatine, Leia,” he explained. - “Not

at all like father used to be, not even in his most allegiant days in the

Emperor’s service. And there’s one more thing… This man is a clone.”

Another fact he knew for sure.

He had not noticed it on Endor. But during his numerous meditations aboard

The Lady Luck, as he had gone back to try and recall anything else from his

experiences on Endor, the Force had given him this revelation.

The man they were dealing with was in fact no man. Not the original man.

He was a clone.

And that, in itself, made this mystery even more mysterious.

And interesting.

- “Are you certain?” Leia asked.

- “Beyond any doubt,” Luke said with absolute confidence. - “I studied and

learned a lot about clone technology during my days on Byss, especially in

relation with the Force.”

When he had been Palpatine’s apprentice himself, he had learned many things

he had never wanted to learn. But he had learned a few useful things in the

process, too.

For example how a Force user could intrude into a physical shape with

relative ease if the body in question had a weak mind. All clones had weak

minds originally.

- “However, the soul and the personality within this one…”

Luke turned to look at the screen again. Yes, this was a clone. But the mind

within was not weak. When it had been created, yes. But that was no longer

the case. A strong mind now occupied this being, someone very powerful with

the Dark Side.

- “I am guessing here but I think this Apprentice might actually be a Sith

from the past,” Luke continued slowly. - “And that he has the knowledge and

ability to enter bodies the same way as Palpatine once could.”

The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed. The mind within

this clone most probably had the same ability that Palpatine had. That would

explain just about everything of the little they knew about him.

Leia had listened to every word he had been saying. And she was beginning to

see a lot of sense in this theory as well.

- “If that is true, Luke, then he could even be a former student of

Palpatine’s.”

- “That’s actually what I believe he is,” Luke agreed. - “And that’s also

why I think he may be a Sith from the past, a recent past, perhaps no more

than a few decades. Forty years, maybe, no more than fifty.”

He looked at Leia again. She believed in his theory. That just made it have

even more sense.

- “The loyalty I sensed from this man towards Palpatine was not something

you build up in a hurry,” he explained. - “Such devotion takes years to

create and form. They know each other. And trust each other. Since when does

Palpatine trust anyone? He never trusted me or father. He never trusted

Mara. He never trusted any of his Dark warriors.”

Luke tapped the screen with his finger, pointing directly at the man’s

tattooed face.

- “But this one he does trust!”

It had been this very trust that had revealed to him everything he knew of

this apprentice. The powerful devotion to his Master. They hadn’t just

recently met, this mysterious man and Palpatine. Somehow, they shared a

history. And it had to go further back, long before Luke had gotten involved

in Palpatine’s affairs.

Perhaps even before his father had become Darth Vader.

Maybe this man was even Vader’s predecessor?

Luke couldn’t know for sure. But it somehow felt right. And the Force had

confirmed to him that the body itself was a clone. But the clone itself

could of course represent the original man. After all, Palpatine had always

preferred his own features for his own clones. Why should his apprentice be

any different?

And the powerful mind within this clone ruled out the possibility that it

was him that had helped Palpatine to Endor. Palpatine would have had to

travel within another individual’s body to be able to relocate. But that

would mean that the original mind and essence of that helping individual

would be erased. At least, that was as far as Luke knew.

He painfully had to admit that he did not know all there was to know of

these kinds of activities within the Force. And he had preferred to not know

of it at all.

Palpatine was truly his superior in this area.

Maybe the apprentice was the one that had helped him to Endor.

Or a second individual was involved.

They didn’t know.

And that was why Luke could not afford to rule out any possibilities yet.

It was still too early in the game.

With time they might learn more.

They must be patient.

- “Is this man still on Endor?” Leia wondered.

- “I think so. As of now, I see no reason for him to leave his Master’s

side.”

- “Why not?”

- “He acted like Palpatine’s personal body guard, unseen but ready,” Luke

explained. - “Like a phantom menace, hiding in the shadows prepared to

strike.”

A phantom menace.

That was truly the perfect description of Palpatine’s apprentice. He had

most likely been precisely that in real life all those decades ago. No

wonder why he was regarded as so valuable that Palpatine needed him again.

Palpatine had tried to gain the Skywalkers’ allegiance. Both from the father

and the son. But he had failed. The next logical step was to turn to someone

that had never failed him. That was fully allegiant and shared Palpatine’s

cause.

Someone who was exactly the same as Palpatine himself.

A phantom menace.

All this seemed to add up. But it also created many new questions while some

old ones were being answered. And not just Luke felt this way.

- “But… If Palpatine is as invincible against anything you and anyone of us

can throw at him, why does he need protection?” Leia wondered.

- “I’ve asked myself the same question ever since,” Luke answered. He had

told Lando this, too. And it was a question worth repeating. That was indeed

the true mystery in all this.

Why did Palpatine need protection if there was no way for anyone to harm

him?

Maybe because there could be someone who could?

Or what they had seen so far wasn’t the whole truth?

Luke looked over to R2, relating to the recordings from Endor that the droid

was carrying.

- “The threat that we see we must take seriously,” he said. - “But it should

not blind us to what happens behind the curtain. There is more going on

here, Leia. I feel it to my bone. I know too well how Palpatine operates.”

Yes.

Too painfully well he knew.

But still not well enough.

If he had, he would have already known how to stop the Sith Master.

- “What do you suggest we do?”

Leia was eager to help her brother with everything he needed. This was a

fight that was everyone’s fight. That was why they had made this vote in the

Senate. And it was time to start moving.

Luke put in another disk and repeated the download.

- “I will give you all the pieces of information I have of this man, as

detailed as I can remember and what I managed to see of him,” he said. -

“It’s not much but at least a profile. I have never seen his species before

but maybe someone else has. Secondly, he’s a clone, of the best quality you

can create today. Who has the funds to make such an excellent clone,

especially since all cloning technology is now illegal? Could the Remnant be

behind this? Or someone else? We better find out. For whoever helped bring

this Sith Apprentice from the past into our present might have plans of

doing it again. If someone is creating clones, we must know about it.”

Leia nodded. Luke always had such an excellent way of bringing in all facts,

including their unanswered questions, that they needed to focus upon. And

she couldn’t agree with him more.

- “Agreed. I will get the N.R.I. on it. And I will tell them to be very

discrete.”

- “Good.”

Luke handed Leia the second disk, her own copy of the profile of their new

enemy. She quickly accepted it and got up to get this over to New Republic

Intelligence as soon as possible.

- “And don’t forget to ask them to search for any connections between the

Remnant and what happened with Mara on Anargosa,” Luke reminded while he

erased all traces of his image from the computer. Leia turned to look at

him. He had already asked her to do this yesterday.

- “I’ve not forgotten, Luke. I’ve already told them. But do you really think

there is a connection?”

- “An Imperial agent tried to kill Mara just after Palpatine revealed

himself. The coincidence can’t be ignored.”

Leia was not as sure about this as Luke was, though. But he seemed to be

right in his theories regarding the Sith Apprentice so maybe he was right

about the man that had assaulted Mara Jade as well.

But the fact that Mara was in any way involved, no matter how small, in this

whole situation made Leia feel very uneasy. Luke’s eagerness as soon as

Mara’s name was mentioned just made her feel even worse.

Luke rose to his feet, too, ready to leave.

- “After I have briefed my colleagues at the Academy I would wish for N.R.I.

to cooperate with them in this matter,” he requested. - “N.R.I. has an

extraordinary network that we might need while the Jedi can get into places

that no one else can.”

- “Or should get into.”

Brother and sister smiled at her last words. She was being ironic, of

course. But Luke knew that somewhere behind that irony, Leia was being

serious. No one should take the risks that the Jedi Knights took. But that

was their duty. And no one was more capable or better prepared for it.

Leia looked at the disk she had been given. She was prepared to make full

use of it. Even if her hopes wasn’t that enormous.

- “I will deal with this personally, Luke, so it gets done right. But if

things truly are as we suspect and if this indeed is a student of

Palpatine’s from the past, all traces of this man might have been wiped out

already. A long time ago. We will be extraordinary lucky if he shows up in

any existing record. If they didn’t want you to notice him on Endor they

will not want us to find anything anywhere else either.”

- “I know. But we must do something,” Luke stated. - “And the Imperials have

never been as skilled as the Sith Lords to keep things hidden.”

- “What will you do now?”

Luke had been so focused to gain the support from the government today that

he had not even thought that far ahead yet. But as soon as he did, his

fatigue hit him again. He was still suffering from his lack of sleep this

last week.

However, he wasn’t quite as tired anymore.

- “I will go home to my apartment and rest for a few hours,” he said. -

“There will not be much rest for me from now on. Meditation will help clear

my mind.”

Leia observed him, once more noticing how the lack of proper sleep had put

traces in his face. Luke was a bit pale and his eyes were dark.

- “Have you gotten any sleep at all since Palpatine emerged?” she wondered

with great concern as she put her arm around his.

No, he had not gotten much sleep.

Except for the night he had spent in Mara’s bunk.

Right next to her.

He could still clearly remember how Mara had kept her arm around his body as

she safely had drifted off into sleep again. And in the end, so had he.

- “Not until the night before yesterday,” Luke answered, realizing that he

had not thought of that until now. And even the following night to this day

had allowed him to sleep properly. Palpatine’s nightmarish visions were

still trying to get to him but they had grown much weaker all of a sudden.

Ever since he and Mara had slept next to each other two nights ago.

- “That was such a relief, finally,”

It had been a relief to him. But it was no such thing to Leia now.

She was pleased that he was able to sleep again and that Palpatine’s

nightmares no longer seemed to affect him as strongly anymore. But the night

he spoke of he had spent on The Lady Luck.

With Mara Jade.

Leia could sense a warm joy rise within her brother as he thought of the

red-haired woman. And his blue eyes, so tired from lack of sleep and of all

the bad news lately, they shone in this very moment.

He reminded her of the young and enthusiastic man that he had once been.

That pleased Leia greatly.

But not that Mara Jade was the one that did this to her brother. The former

Emperor’s Hand should not be the one that provided her brother with

happiness!

And she had not forgotten how Jade had kissed Luke inside Calrissian’s

hangar yesterday. Or how Luke had kissed her in return.

Despite what Luke was trying to make her believe, something was going on!

And Leia was going to find out what it was!

Before she was able to answer, Luke snapped out of his seemingly dreamy

state.

- “I’d like to see you again before I leave for the Academy, Leia, if I

can.”

- “Of course,” she said. - “I’ll leave for home at 18:00.”

- “I’ll be there.”

He gave her a small kiss on the cheek before he and R2 left the office.

- “I love you,” he whispered.

Leia had no doubt in her brother’s words. Somehow, deep down, Luke still

loved her as much as he used to do. But he never gave her any of that

anymore.

Why?

Why?
